So, what is it with this tendency to apostrophize plurals? We don’t get it. Do you?

This is just another example of apostrophailure.
The thing that kills me is inconsistencies in the errors. There’s a cafe near me that advertises something like, “pastries, organic coffees, herbal tea’s.” Huh? I wish I could get inside the heads of people who write like that, because I see it a lot. Are they simply not thinking, or are they following some sort of skewed set of rules?
We stayed once at the Shepher’s’ Arms in Ennerdale. Chatting to the landlord, he said that the apostrophe had to come before the s, because the inn used to belong to the Shepherd family – not named for an association of shepherds.. He then told us that, when he needed a new sign, he’d stressed to the sign-writer that the apostrophe had to come BEFORE the s.
Yes, you’ve guessed it: the word “shepherd” WAS followed by an apostrophe. As was the word “Arm”. And the S on “Shepherd” was also preceded by the apostrophe: “The ‘Shepherd’s Arm’s”. He wasn’t best pleased…
