For years now, we have been fretting, along with a lot of you, over grocery stores’ blatant grammar goof in their express lane signs.
You know …
“15 Items or Less” instead of
“15 Items or Fewer”
Well, we are pleased to say that our local Randalls has solved this dilemma once and for all … and simply.
Here’s their solution:
“express 15 item limit”
THANK YOU!
Brilliant! 😀

I have become the grammar police! I simply cannot be quiet any longer!
I have written to TNT because of their stupid ads about “less”
commercials.
I have written to Tropicana about their “gooder” commercials.
I wrote to a local columnist about his “smallest of the two”.
I have written to the government about incomplete and run-on sentences.
I have written to a variety of entities asking them to fire their advertising agencies because obviously they are uneducated people who do not understand our language.
I realize that my emails will probably have no effect, but writing
them makes me feel better.
[…] Limit less … […]
One word… Well, many really.
‘The idea that “less” can’t be used with count nouns isn’t well supported; it’s a rule that hasn’t ever been strictly followed, especially for count nouns that can be perceived as masses. Groceries lend themselves to perception as a mass, so it’s no surprise that “10 items or less” is favored now, just as it has been historically. Please stop complaining about this.’
